Brazilians of Japanese Descent

Pedro's in town!

Pedro is a colleague from the São Paulo, Brazil office and also a friend. Here is a picture of him at Batu Caves:

Some of you are probably scratching your heads and wondering... 'Where's the Brazilian? All I see is this chinese guy standing in the middle of the photo'. LOL!

Today's post is gonna be about Brazilian culture and history. Did you know that Brazil has the largest population of Japanese that are living outside Japan? The Brazilian Institute of Statistics recorded that there are 1.4 million Japanese living in Brazil in 2010! Fascinating, isn't it?

As I understand it, in the early 20th century, coffee was the main export product for Brazil. Brazilian farmers needed labor to work in the coffee plantations and in 1907, a treaty was signed between Brazil and Japan, permitting Japanese to migrate to Brazil.

The beginning of World War I in 1914 started a boom in Japanese migration to Brazil; such that between 1917 and 1940 over 164,000 Japanese came to Brazil, 75% of them going to São Paulo, where most of the coffee plantations were located.

If you like to learn more, do check out this web page on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Brazilian. This is really interesting stuff.

During my time in São Paulo, I've made friends with some very cool people who are Brazilian of Japanese descent. Here is a picture of Marcela (far right) and me, with Natalia.

And here's us with Eduardo (far right).

Most of these young working adults are 3rd Generation Brazilian of Japanese descent. All of them are as Brazilian as can be and most of them can't speak Japanese. They love their Brazilian chopp, picanha, beaches and samba. They wait eagerly every year for Carnival, where they dance like nobody is watching and party like rock stars :)

The Japanese have now assimilated well into Brazil and hold some notable positions in Brazilian politics and in the business world. There are even some famous celebrities such as Sabrina Sato, a Brazilian comedian and tv personality.

She's half Japanese, 1/4 Swiss, 1/4 Lebanese and 100% Brazilian. And she is gorgeous!

Something that I've noticed but never mentioned on my blog before is that São Paulo is truly a melting pot of the world. The economy is booming and thus, has attracted people from all over. I've met people from as far as China & Korea to Lebanon & Iran, Mexico & Germany who are all living and working there. And there are so many inter-marriages going on that you can find some really exotic looking people there. Like Sabrina Sato.

Well, that's all for culture and history today. And if you want to know where you can find sexy Brazilian bikinis for sale, like the one that Sabrina Sato is wearing above, look no further than here: www.liquido.com.my

Have a great day, folks!

Little know Brazilian Culture

Every country with 4 seasons will have these:
- The summer blockbuster movie of the year
AND
- The summer hit song.

In 2012, there were 2 particular songs that caught Brazil (and the rest of Latin America) by storm. The first was 'Ai Se Eu Te Pego' by Michel Telo. For those of you who do not know this song, you are missing out on the most awesomest thing that ever came out of Brazil in 2012! (You can't really go wrong with a YouTube video that has 498 Million views)

Here's the video, please watch it now! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcm55lU9knw

'Ai Se Eu Te Pego' was crazy popular. During Carnival in February in 2012, this song was played everywhere, over and over again. Back then, my Portuguese was still crap, but yet, I still memorized this song.

This song came with it's own dance. The dance moves involved grabbing someone and humping them (I'm serious... hahaha! You can't expect anything less from a Brazilian summer hit song!)

In fact, this song was so popular amoung college students in the USA that Michel Telo made an English version. The lyrics sound ridicolous in English, but it is still very, very fun. The English version can be seen here (amoungst beautiful Brazilian women in Brazilian bikinis).

In my humble opinion, the Portuguese version sounds cooler compared to the English version.

The other song worth mentioning is 'Tchu Tcha Tcha' by João Lucas & Marcelo. This song is really fun and silly with ridicolous lyrics, and was crazy popular during the summer of 2012 in Brazil too.

Here's part of the lyrics (translated from Portuguese to English)

" I arrived at the party, craving for a beer
The guys here are in the vibe, everyone wants to dance
A girl called me and said: Do the "tchu tcha tcha" to me
I asked her "What is it like?" She said "Let me show you"
It's a sexy dance, it catched on in Goiania
It was an explosion in Minas (Gerais), it catched on in Tocantins
The girls from the North dance to it, it's gonna catch on this summer
So do the "tchu tcha tcha" to me. The whole Brazil will sing it along
With João Lucas e Marcelo"

For the benefit of those who are not familiar, Goiania, Minas & Tocantins are names of states in Brazil.

In 2013, a popular Brazilian summer hit song was, 'Ah Leleke Leke Leke Leke'.

Remember the first time you saw 'Gangnam Style' on YouTube?
I remember mine... I was like.. "What the hell IS THIS???" Well, you might have the exact same reaction when you watch 'Ah Leleke Leke Leke Leke' for the first time.
Don't say I didn't warn you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPhmwR3cIeo

'Ah Leleke Leke Leke Leke' is Brazilian Funk, popularized in Rio de Janeiro. Here's what wikipedia had to say about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk_carioca. "increasingly popular amongst (mainly) low classes in other parts of Brazil" - kinda explains a lot doesn't it. :P

If you enjoyed 'Ah Leleke Leke Leke Leke', you might enjoy this next video that I am about reveal to you. It's like, the ULTIMATE Brazilian Funk; you will either love it or hate it; laugh ot cry. The choice is up to you to click on this link. Again, don't say I didn't warn you !!!
